Our approach

Cosmetic dentistry that lasts

At Dental on Flinders, we believe cosmetic dentistry should enhance your smile — not compromise your dental health. Every cosmetic treatment we recommend is clinically justified and discussed in full at your consultation before any work begins.

We take a conservative approach wherever possible. For teeth whitening and composite bonding, we avoid removing healthy tooth structure. For porcelain veneers, we use minimal preparation techniques that preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible.

Our cosmetic dentist Dr Howard Wu has a particular interest in smile design, Invisalign and veneer work. He takes the time to understand your goals and explain what is achievable — so you can make a fully informed decision before committing to treatment.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about cosmetic dentistry at Dental on Flinders.

Composite veneers are completed chair-side in a single visit using tooth-coloured resin bonded directly to your teeth. They are more affordable and involve minimal tooth preparation, but typically last 5–7 years before requiring touch-ups. Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a laboratory and permanently bonded to your teeth. They are more durable, stain-resistant and lifelike, with survival rates exceeding 90% at 10 years when placed with minimal preparation. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate option based on your goals and clinical situation.
Professional teeth whitening is safe when prescribed and supervised by a dentist. In Australia, only registered dentists can legally supply whitening products containing more than 6% hydrogen peroxide — the concentration required for effective results. Over-the-counter products are limited to low concentrations and are significantly less effective. Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity during whitening, which resolves after treatment. We will assess your suitability at your consultation and advise on the best approach for your teeth.
Invisalign is suitable for a wide range of orthodontic cases including crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites and crossbites. The best way to find out if it is right for you is to book a free suitability assessment with Dr Howard Wu. At this appointment he will assess your teeth, discuss your goals, and give you an honest assessment of whether Invisalign can achieve the result you are looking for — and at what cost.
Most health funds do not cover purely cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening or veneers placed for aesthetic reasons. However, some treatments have both functional and cosmetic components — for example, a crown placed on a badly damaged tooth — and these may attract a health fund benefit. We recommend checking your policy or speaking with your fund directly. We have HICAPS on-site and can process your claim on the day.
This depends on the treatment. Professional teeth whitening results typically last 1–2 years with good oral hygiene, and can be maintained with our lifetime whitening top-up program. Composite veneers generally last 5–7 years. Porcelain veneers have survival rates exceeding 90% at 10 years. Invisalign results are permanent provided you wear your retainer as instructed. Your dentist will give you a realistic expectation of longevity at your consultation.
A smile makeover is a personalised combination of cosmetic treatments — which might include whitening, veneers, Invisalign, bonding or crowns — designed to address multiple concerns at once. At your cosmetic consultation we will discuss what is bothering you about your smile, assess your teeth and gums, and develop a staged treatment plan with a full cost breakdown. We take a phased approach so you are never committed to more than you are comfortable with.
